What a working coffee estate means for guests

Not a plantation-view hotel — a farm that is still being farmed, with two rooms on top of the family bungalow.

Plenty of places in Wayanad will sell you a view of a plantation. The distinction worth understanding before you book is whether the plantation is scenery or whether it is still a working farm — because it changes what your morning sounds like.

The estate is Mathew's, and he still farms it

Mathew is the coffee planter here. The Robusta, the black pepper climbing the shade trees, and the exotic fruit you will be handed at breakfast are grown on the land you are staying on. The rooms were built on top of the family bungalow, which means you are not adjacent to a farm — you are in the middle of one that is still in production.

Some mornings you will hear it happening. That is the point.

Two rooms, not a resort

There are two rooms. You can book one, or take the whole terrace if you would rather have the place to yourselves. Both have full-height glass onto the coffee, a balcony, an ensuite bathroom with a soaking tub, a tea station, and the ordinary practical things — Wi-Fi, hot water, a wardrobe.

Because there are only two, the estate never feels busy in the way a property with twenty rooms does.

The walk is the reason to come

The drying yard is about a five-minute walk. Mathew walks the plantation with guests who want to go — and that is when you actually find out what everything is: which vine is pepper, what stage the cherries are at, why the shade trees matter. You can do it slowly in an hour or stretch it across a morning.

What is arranged for you

Breakfast and dinner are in the house — Malabar food. Guided treks, a driver for the day, and pickups are arranged rather than merely recommended. Tell us roughly what you are after and how long you have, and the days get put together for you.

Coffee Terrace is two rooms on a working Robusta estate near Kalpetta, Wayanad — the coffee, pepper and fruit outside your window are grown by the family that hosts you.
