If you're picking dates for a stay on a working coffee estate, this is usually the real question underneath "when should I visit": will I actually see the harvest, or will the trees just be trees?

It's a fair thing to want answered before you book, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a vague one.

If your dates fall in that window, there will be harvest work happening on the estate while you're here — cherries coming off the trees, and the drying yard in use. If they fall outside it, the plantation is still very much a working one, just not mid-harvest.

Harvest is a season rather than a fixed week. It follows when the trees flowered and how the rain came that year, so the busiest part of those four months shifts a little from season to season. What harvest actually looks like here

Ripe cherries don't arrive all at once — not even on the same branch — so picking happens in passes rather than in one sweep. The drying yard is a five-minute walk from the rooms, so if there's activity there during your stay, it's close enough to wander over to without arranging anything.

What's here whether or not you catch harvest

A few things don't depend on timing at all:

• The estate is under working cultivation year-round — Robusta coffee, black pepper grown up through the shade trees, and fruit including rambutan and rose apple.
• Mathew, who owns and farms the estate, walks guests through the plantation himself. That's worth as much as catching harvest — he can explain what's growing and why, in season or out of it.

If seeing harvest is the reason for the trip, aim for October to January, and get in touch about the specific weeks you're considering.

If it isn't — if the trip is really about the rooms, the food, the quiet, and being somewhere that grows things — then come whenever suits you. The estate doesn't switch off between harvests.
